Summary : Site of a former moated mansion. The moat is now occupied by two houses, one of which was converted from a chapel in the 16th century. Close to the house, fragments of Norman masonry have been found. The chapel was built circa 1300, converted in the 16th century and partly rebuilt in 1703. It retains a three-light arched window in the east gable wall. The house is 18th century in date, extended in the 19th century. Possibly the site of a house granted a licence to crenellate in 1343. |
More information : (TG 25160174) Blackford Hall (NR) Moat (NR) (1) A former mansion situated inside the moat. The house (on the S) in all probability is the chapel. Close to the house, fragments of Norman masonry have been found. (2) A house of many periods built and flint nodules. The old portion at TG 25150174 has a traceried window in its E gable and two blocked lights in the N side, where a tie bar is dated 1703. The Norman masonry, apparently from several arches has been built into a S porch. See photo and 25" survey. (3) Only two water-filled arms of this homestead moat remain. They have a maximum length of 70.0m with a width of 13.0m and attain a maximum depth of 1.5m. A possible inlet is situated at the NW corner and the moat drains from the SW corner into a pond. The island is level with the surrounding area and contains the probable remains of Chapel converted into a dwelling house, with a more modern house (Blackford Hall) adjoining. (4)
