Summary : The Carmelite Friary was founded in 1256 and dissolved in 1538. The only surviving remains are those of the ossuary, a brick built undercroft, now used as a printing museum. The walls are of late 13th and 14th century date with 15th century vaulting. Excavations in the undercroft suggest that it may have served as a parlour entrance between the church to the North and cloister to the South. A large buttress found in the North-East corner may have been an early phase of the church. Interpretation was made difficult by destruction of early floor levels in the undercroft. |
