More information : (TG 24190884) ST LEONARD's PRIORY (NR) (Remains of) (1) The priory of St. Leonard was built by Bishop Herbert de Losinga to accommodate a number of monks while the cathedral church and priory were being erected. It afterwards continued as a Benedictine cell of the monastery under the rule of a prior. Four monks remained after the Black Death and there appear to have been a prior with at least four monks in 1514. It was dissolved in 1539 when the site and demesnes were granted to Thomas, Duke of Norfolk. (2,3) At 9.0m. length of collapsed rubble wall, 2.5 high is all that remains of St. Leonard's Priory. The walling appears to represent the remains of a gatehouse and the east end of a building. (4) |
