Summary : This site was originally occupied by the Franciscan Friars between 1232 and 1269, when they moved to their new site (SU80NE104). The hospital moved here between 1269-1290, and was for a prior, chaplain, 13 brothers and sisters, and for poor travellers.It survived the Dissolution and, uniquely, is the only Mediaeval hospital still in use, the cubicles in the infirmary having been converted into apartments.
More information : Gatehouse and C14 hall and chapel under the roof. Chimneys and small dwellinghouses of 2 rooms each were inserted in the hall in 1680. Very fine open timber. C14 roof supported on massive wooden posts.
