St Michaels Hospital

Hob Uid: 1318776
Location :
Newcastle upon Tyne
Non Civil Parish
Grid Ref : NZ2547064110
Summary : The Carmelite Friary was originally located without the walls at Newcastle in 1262. The site was later bisected by a new town wall at Wall Knoll, and moved premises in 1307 to the site of the defunct Friars of the sack. In 1360, William de Acton, a burgess, founded the hospital of St Michael on the Wall Knoll site, (also Acton's Hospital, or Holy Trinity Hospital), under the Trinitarians. It was suppressed in 1539. The site is on the North side of Sallyport and South of Wallknoll Tower, close to Pandon Gate, a main thoroughfare into the city.
