Monument Number 131629

Hob Uid: 131629
Location :
Norfolk
Broadland
Swannington
Grid Ref : TG1275018280
Summary : Bowl barrow
More information : (TG 12751828) Tumulus (O.E.) (1)

Tumulus (cut into by gravel pit 27-6-1933) noted in 1911 by W.G
Clarke. Marked in 1838 by OS. Dug into c.1928-9 and handled food
vessels were found.
In British Museum. (2)

The barrow is at present well covereed by bracken and a close
examination was not possible. There does not seem to be a ditch and
the gravel digging has not apparently impinged on the mound itself.
A central depression with radial ditch to the SSW is presumably the result of the excavation. See 25". (3)

A bowl barrow 23.0m N-S by 16.0m transversely and 2.0m in height.
It is covered by bracken and gorse and the E segment has been
destroyed by quarrying. The top and SW side have been dug into
(? the excavation circa 1928-9).

Surveyed at 1:2500 on MSD. (4)

A BA Food Vessel and a RB pot found in this barrow are in the BM.
A polished axe in the Norwich Castle Museum is said to have come from
the barrow in 1855. (5)
