Summary : Excavations at Burnby Lane, Hayton, since 1995 have uncovered a sequence of occupation at this site. The first phase appears to be a range of Iron Age ladder enclosures, one of which contains round houses. In the earlier Roman phase the round houses were replaced by a substantial timber-built lrectangular building with a small stone bath-house attached; a small cremation cemetery was also uncovered. During the later Roman period the timber house was demolished and the bath-house was incorporated into the wing of a larger stone building. This building was severely damaged by plough action. |
