Summary : Ixworth Abbey; a private house of mainly 17th and 18th century appearance, incorporating considerable 13th century remains of the East range of the Augustinian Priory, (TL97SW32). The house is a complex irregular form, the 18th century North front being the main range. The earliest parts are the early 13th century undercroft of the dorter. The truncated remains of the South range of the Priory claustral buildings, and the whole of the East, dorter, range are incorporated in the house, except for the chapter house. The 15th century abbot's lodging at the South-East angle of the East range is retained. The house was substantially altered in the 16th and 17th centuries, and again in the 18th century. There was considerable restoration and alterations in the 1960's. |
