More information : A Cistercian cell or grange was founded at Field Dalling c.1138 and dissolved 1414. `Some monks were sent to this cell or priory, which was sometimes parcel of Long Bennington (Lincs) (a,b). The `priories' at both places seem to have been no more than granges'. (1)
Manor Farm buildings (TG 007384) stand on the site of Field Dalling Priory. In some walls there are pieces of dressed stone. (2)
A moat at TG 009383 is supposed to be the site of a `cell or hermitage'. (3,4)
Manor Farm is a bleak uninteresting predominantly flint and brick residence with a Palladian door. There is no dressed stone evident that might be associated with a former monastic house. The published moat is irregular and densely covered by mature trees and young afforestation; owing to the latter, complete perambulation was not possible but the island holds neither remains or traces of a building and the work cannot be accurately classified, but a Cistercian origin seems remote. Published survey (25") of moat only revised. (5) |
