Lyng Hall

Hob Uid: 130884
Location :
Norfolk
North Norfolk
Wood Norton
Grid Ref : TG0122028880
Summary : Earthwork remains of moated complex, licenced in 1343.
More information : (TG 01222888) Lyng Hall (NR) (Site of) (1)

The remains of the manor of John de Sane from whom it passed to Alice de Luton during Henry III and was then called Luton fee. Afterwards it came to the Gerbridge family and Thomas Gerbridge held it in 1287. It is first mentioned as Ling Hall in 1359. (2)

A fine example of a moated manorial complex. The earthworks at this site are very strongly constructed and are in a good state of
preservation. The site is covered by a thick wood.

Surveyed at 1:2500.

There are no extant remains of the Hall.

The extant features comprise a central moated work (the site of the Hall) from which four irregular ditched enclosures extend to form a substantial well defended site; the main moat measures internally 43.0m north-south by 32.0m east-west and the enclosed area is at the same height as the surrounding general levels. The ditches attain a maximum depth of 4.5m and a maximum width a circa 17.0m. The original entrance would appear to have been at the south west corner. A marshy area at TG 01182895 is probably an original fishpond. No building foundations are evident at any point. There is much seasonal water in the ditches. (3)

No change since report of 7.3.73. Survey of 1.3.73 correct and transferred to 1:2500 MSD. (4)

Licenced in 1343. (5)
