High Grains Bastle

Summary : The monument includes High Grains medieval bastle, a roofless structure formerly of two storeys but now standing to ground floor height only, and a later medieval shieling which incorporated the remains of the bastle. It is located 130 metres west of High Grains Farm. The bastle is constructed from calciferous sandstone rubble and measures 9.5 metres north east to south west by 6.6 metres north east to south east externally with walls up to 1.3 metres thick and up to 1.9 metres high. Attached to the north eastern end of the bastle is a later stone-built medieval shieling with two walls surviving up to a height of circa 1.6 metres high.

Close to Kirk Beck, west of High Grains farm are the remains of a ruined bastle. The walls stand to a height of about 6 feet with an
entrance doorway in the NE end. A crosswall dividing the building into two rooms is not original. (2)

Four walls between 6 feet to 7 feet high and about 3 feet 6 inches thick. (3)

The remains of the bastle are as described by Authorities 2 and 3 and measure 9.7m NE-SW by 7.2m. (4)

NY 58577542. The remains of 2 shielings (A) and (B) and a length of walling (C), adjoin the pele tower.
(A) measuring 28.5 feet by 16.5 feet, orientated NE-SW abuts on the pele tower to the SE.
(B) measuring 21 feet by 15 feet, orientated NW-SE abuts on the pele tower to the NW.
(C) measuring 21 feet by over 8 feet, is between 4 feet and 4.5 feet thick, and is thought to be part of a hut or a barmkin of the pele. (6)
