More information : (NY 5222 6432) Milecastle 56 (GS) (Site of) (1)
Through Walton the general course of the Wall lies below the Black Bull Inn, and Milecastle 56 (Walton) is wholly obliterated. (2)
There is a theory that the milecastle once stood in a corner of the field called Bendle's Croft, where now some beech trees and a mound face a bend in the road from Walton to King Water, but for this also evidence is lacking. (3)
Probable site of milecastle at NY 5228 6435, although there are no surface traces. There are no traces of it where shown by OS. (4)
MacLauchlan noted slight marks of the milecastle south of the angle in the road south-south east from the church (5a). The milecastle was searched for in vain (5b). There are no surface traces of the milecastle and the precise location is unknown. From measurements from adjoining turrets, it is assumed to have been situated in the general area NY 522 643. There is no information to back up the position shown on OS 6" 1957. (5) |
