More information : (NY 5535 6332) Lanercost Bridge (1)
"A beautiful medieval bridge of two elliptical arches, slightly humped, and with a triangular cutwater". (2)
Grade 1. Scheduled. (3)
A fine 18th century bridge; upstream are remains of a medieval bridge (NY 56 SE 4). (4)
In good condition, but now closed to road traffic, having been replaced by a modern bridge in 1962. See photograph. An inscribed stone reads: 'This bridge was built in the 2 year of King James II.' (5)
This datestone is thought to come from a bridge, now demolished, located east of the present structure. (See O.S. 6" map 1957). The present bridge is probably early 18th century in date; there was another bridge just to the north of this one which was demolished in 1811 and crossed another, now filled in, branch of the River Irthing.
