Summary : The site of Roman milecastle 54, part of the defences supporting Hadrian's Wall. Earthwork remains of the milecastle survive as an unsurveyable platform in a west-facing hill-slope.
More information : (NY 5506 6446) Milecastle 54 (GS) (Site of) (1) Milecastle 54, just west of Randylands, excavated in 1934 (3), measured internally 77' 6" N-S and 64' 3" E-W. It contained a west barrack comprising two rooms, one of which had stone benches, hearth and millstone. (2-3) It overlay an earlier Turf Wall milecastle, built in beaten clay owing to a deficiency of good turf. (4) No surface traces. (5) One (or ? 2) building stones found here. Nos 1959 and 1960. (6) Detailed discussions of finds from 1930s excavations. (7) NY 5506 6444: the milecastle survives as an unsurveyable platform in a west-facing hill-slope at the position shown by OS at the revised NGR of NY 5506 6444. (8) Scheduled (9) Indestinct earthworks at NY 5506 6444 can be seen on aerial photographs.(10) Plan of milecastle 54 (Randylands). (11) Located on the English Heritage map of Hadrian's Wall 2010.
