Milecastle 54, just west of Randylands, excavated in 1934 (3), measured internally 77' 6" N-S and 64' 3" E-W. It contained a west barrack comprising two rooms, one of which had stone benches, hearth and millstone. (2-3)
It overlay an earlier Turf Wall milecastle, built in beaten clay owing to a deficiency of good turf. (4)

NY 5506 6444: the milecastle survives as an unsurveyable platform in a west-facing hill-slope at the position shown by OS at the revised NGR of NY 5506 6444. (8)
