Summary : A nunnery was founded at Carlisle after a synod of 685 when land was granted to St Cuthbert by Egfrith, King of Northumbria. There was a school and apparently clerks as well as monks in a separated monastery, Eadred being Abbot circa 854. Apparently destroyed circa 875. It is possible that the Saxon cemetery discovered in the churchyard of Carlisle Cathedral belonged to this foundation, (see NY35NE173). |
