Historic England Research Records

Monument Number 1265431

Hob Uid: 1265431
Location :
West Sussex
Arun
Pagham
Grid Ref : SZ8800097000
Summary : There are two charters, dated 680 and 685, which refer to lands owned by Selsey monastery, and including St Andrew's Church on the East side of `uedringmutha', that is Wittering Haven, later called Pagham Harbour. This would imply a community at Wythering (Pagham) rather than West Wittering, which has previously been inferred. However, the charters are regarded as spurious, possible inventions.
