Monument Number 12598

Hob Uid: 12598
Location :
Cumbria
Carlisle
Carlatton
Grid Ref : NY5252352810
Summary : Six large stones - suggestions of a circle and/or alignment. One of these standing stone is visible on air photos.
More information : Six megalithic stones found in Carlatton Parish
1. Near Fell End (NY 53395101) a granite boulder 5' x 3'3" x 1'8".
2. Also near Fell End (NY 53375117) a flat block of limestone 3'1" x 2'3" x 1'3".
3. Near Carlatton Demesne (NY 52305253) a boulder 4'5" x 3'2" x 3'3", tilted on its side.
4. Also near Carlatton Demesne an upright block of hard sandstone 3'7" x 3' x 2'6". Mr O G S Crawford is of the opinion that this stone had been one of a circle.
5. Near Carlatton Middle (NY 52505360) a stone deeply sunk in garden mould, the portion above ground being 2'3" x 2'7" x 2'.
6. Also near Carlatton Middle a boulder 3'6" x 3'8" x 1'5" lying on its side.
Local tradition claims that stones 3-6 are the remains of a stone alignment. (1)

Only two of these stones could be located, the granite boulder near Fell End (NGR as given), and the 'upright sandstone block' at NY 52515280 near Carlatton Demesne. The latter is earthfast and is the only one of the two that is reminiscent of a standing stone. None of the tenant farmers had any information concerning the other four stones. (2)

The stone described above at NY5251 5280 (no. 4 in the list) near the middle of the field on the north-west side of Carlatton Demesne is visible on air photos. (3)
