Historic England Research Records

Hallsteads

Hob Uid: 12523
Location :
Cumbria
Carlisle
Castle Carrock
Grid Ref : NY5455855136
Summary : Large flat topped mound averaging 3m high. Originally sub-rectangular in shape it has been levelled to the south by waterworks, construction of which in 1904 apparantly showed the earthwork to be 'natural'. However, a squared log and large charred pointed stake found at the site have been used to suggest a palisade or stockade. An earthwork mound at this location is visible on aerial photographs, and has been mapped by English Heritage's Hadrian's Wall NMP. Scheduled as a 'camp'.
More information : (NY 5455 5513) Hallsteads (NAT) Earthwork (GT) (1)

Examination of this feature when it was excavated for waterworks in 1904 showed it to be natural. (2)

A squared log found (a large charred pointed stake was also found before 1881) suggests a palisade or gateway; the feature may have been used for a stockade. (3)

A large flat-topped mound averaging 3.0m in height, originally sub-rectangular in shape but now levelled to the south by waterworks. It is planted with conifers. There is no evidence of there having been an earthwork on the top. Published survey (25") revised. (4)

NY 545552 Hallsteads Iron Age camp; scheduled. (5)

An earthwork mound at this location is visible on aerial photographs taken in 1945, and has been mapped by English Heritage's Hadrian's Wall NMP. It is uncertain whether the mound is archaeological or natural in origin. (6)
