More information : A settlement and field system of probable Roman date were seen as cropmarks and mapped from air photographs. An enclosure complex of superimposed enclosures, representing multiphase development, is possibly a villa complex centred at SE 7915 4034. The average dimensions of the enclosures are less than 45 m; they are all very regular with straight sides and rounded corners, but the majority are not completely visible. One enclosure, 30 by 30 m and centred at SE 7911 4025, has a slightly different alignment to the main complex, but similar to the field system 300 m to the west. The field system has an integral trackway, aligned north-south. A group of up to five conjoined enclosures is associated on the east; centred at SE 7880 4030, only one is completely visible and it has dimensions of 50 m and 30m. Fragments of ditches to either side of the trackway indicate further enclosures. (1-2) |
