BARROW 3

DESCRIPTION + /

A ring ditch rerpresenting the site of an Early Bronze Age round barrow, part of the linear cemetery at Barrow Hills (see SU 59 NW 8). Excavated in 1944, the circular ditch enclosed an area of about 24.5 metres diameter. To the northeast, the ditch was cut by the ditch of the second, enlarged phase of Barrow 4 (SU 59 NW 127). To the southwest, while not quite touching it appears that Barrow 2 (SU 59 NW 124) is earlier. A central subrectangular grave contained a crouched inhumation of an adult male (described as "ageing"). A bronze dagger was by the right hand. Traces of a haft survived on the hilt, and remains of a possible leather sheath were also found. Bones from the skeleton have produced a radiocarbon date of 2500-1950 BC (calibrated).
