Summary : Built to the designs of James Bunstone Bunning in 1849-52. Opened 6 October 1852. Debtors admitted in 1870. Radial plan with four cell blocks for adult males. Majority of buildings constructed in brick. Alterations made to the cell blocks between 1881 and 1890. Male hospital erected in 1883-4. New reception blocks and laundry built in 1886. New female infirmary added in 1891-2. Prison became all-female in 1902. In 1905 a new wing was opened. By 1968 it was concluded that the prison should be demolished and a new one built on the site. HMP Holloway was erected between 1970 and 1983 whilst demolition work was being carried out.
