More information : [NY 54804667] Stone circle [GT] (1)
Lat 45 48' 46" long 2 42' 12". The remains of a stone circle c.180' in diameter at Broomrigg Plantation, Ainstable. Only four stones remain, together with five possible outliers, two to the N and three to the NW, and a scatter of a large number of smaller stones. (2)
Excavations carried out in 1950 showed that the stones were set 8 or 9 ins in the ground in carefully made sockets packed with stones, and where unweathered the stones were undoubtedly hammer - dressed. (See plan AO/LP/63/321 which appears to show eight stones of the circle). (3)
Scheduled. (4)
Stones 1-6 (see plan) survive despite recent re-afforestation, 7 & 8 could not be found by measurement, nor one of the smaller stones shown in the vicinity of 1. In the prevailing circumstances (plantation now semi-mature), only one of the outliers could be located at NY 54794675. Re-surveyed at 1:2500. (5)
