More information : 'Townhead, Newbiggin ..... Close by a bastle-house, now used as a farm building. The bastle-house is of stone, two-storeyed with the ground floor for cattle and the sparsely-windowed upper room for living'. (Townhead is at NY 563 491) (1) NY 5627 4907. As described by Pevsner and in fair condition. See photograph. (2) Full description and plan. (3) Bastle, now a byre with store above. Built of red sandstone rubble with large quoins and Welsh slate roof. Listed Grade II*. (4) Listed as a bastle by Cathcart King. (5)
