MONUMENT NO. 1218346

DESCRIPTION + /

Works entrance to the Great Western Railway Swindon Works situated on London Street opposite the Mechanics Institute. The entrance comprises a large arch flanked by two smaller openings which lead into a subway which was constructed in 1870 and originally had turnstiles, but these were removed so that light vehicles could also use this route. The subway is 115 metres in length, 4.6 metres in width and 2.1 metres in height and passes under the carriage works and the main railway line, terminating at the western end of the general offices. The subway was extended during the early 20th century to continue northwards under the general offices to the general stores building on the east of the Gloucester Railway Line. This part of the subway was blocked in 1992.
