MONUMENT NO. 1217443

DESCRIPTION + /

Two Neolithic pit circles located within the area enclosed by a henge [TF 10 NW 59]. They were excavated in 1962-3, and each comprised 10 oval pits, measuring circa 9m and 14m in diameter respectively. Some of the pits appeared to have been refilled soon after digging, while others appeared to have been subsequently recut or enlarged. It seems unikley that they held posts. Finds were few, although some animal teeth and bones were recovered. Charcoal, some grains of hulled barley, and a few Neolithic pottey sherds were also found. A pit belonging to one of the circles was dug into the fill of the southern ditch of the cursus [TF 10 NW 58].
