An Inquisition of 1326 refers to a dwelling here partially burned by the Scots. McIntire considers there was a 14th c pele tower, but is not certain whether any of this remains. He dates the main block of the present building to c 1450, though RCHM says "probably last quarter of 14th c". The chapel in the north wing is 15th c. Alterations and additions to the house were made in the 16th and 17th c. There has also been some relatively modern building. (2-3)
