Summary : Newby Hall is a country house built in the first half of the 17th century with circa 1700 additions.

Newby Hall, house and barns, on the south side of the road in Newby
village. The House is of H-shaped plan and of two storeys with attics;the walls are of rubble and the roofs are slate-covered. It was built
in the first half of the 17th century and has a low addition of circa
1700 on the west side. The windows are mostly original and of one, twoand three lights with stone mullions and labels. The front doorway hasa later architrave and above it is a late 17th century achievement of
arms of Nevinson set in a square panel. On the south side is an
original doorway with a triangular head and on the east side is a
doorway with a four centred head, now blocked. Adjoining the east wingof the house is a wall with an enriched doorway having the initials
and date I and EN 1685 on the lintel. (2)

During October 2001 and March 2002 an archaeological investigation was undertaken by EH staff of the fields south of Newby Hall and of the walled enclosure on the east side of the Hall. For further information of what was found and for details of the full site report see entry for NY 52 SE 23. (4)
