More information : (NY 54532899) Roman Burial Ground (R) (1) "I visited the site of the excavation of a Roman Burial Ground at NY 54532899. All the excavations have been filled in except those marked 'A' and 'B' on the 1:2500 survey." (See Illustration Card.) (2) Rescue excavations in 1966-67 in advance of road works revealed well over 200 burials, mostly cremations and ranging in date from 2nd-4th century. Also discovered were fragments of inscriptions and sculpture, stone cists, bone objects, pottery, glass, jewellery and an enamelled bronze cup. 2 tombstones were found on the site in the 19th century. (3-9) Four worked flints and utilised pebble found at approximately NY 545 290 in 1966 are recorded by Miss D Charlesworth. Peterborough-type Neolithic pottery was found in 1967 at NY 544290 by G Nelson, and in the same area more flints by J D Dagg. These finds were made in the same general area as the traces of ring-ditches shown on St Joseph air photograph DO 69 (AP with NY 52 NW 7).
