Monument Number 1202213

Hob Uid: 1202213
Location :
North Yorkshire
Richmondshire
East Witton
Grid Ref : SE1726085740
Summary : Main stone-lined drain serving the conventual buildings of the medieval Jervaulx Abbey; now disused and in places robbed for its stone, although exposed by excavation in the immediate vicinity of the abbey ruins.
More information : The main stone-lined drain beneath the conventual buildings of Jervaulx Abbey which would have flushed the latrines and taken away kitchen refuse etc, is centred at SE 1726 8574. It branches off the main supply leat (SE 18 NE 168) in the west at c SE 1704 8570 and runs almost due east for approximately 500m to discharge into the abbey outfall drain (SE 18 NE 170) leading back to the River Ure. Within the area of the conventual buildings its course is known through excavation, and stretches have been left exposed although now robbed of their capping. Much of the rest of its course either side of the conventual ruins is visible as a shallow trench on the surface, indicating that it has been robbed for its capping stone here too. (A small part of the course of the feature in the west was previously picked up by Yorkshire Dales AP mapping as MORPH NY.880.7.5).

Surveyed at 1:1000 scale (and at larger scale within the area of the conventual ruins) as part of the RCHME Jervaulx Abbey Survey (feature WF3). See the report (1a) and plans in the NMR for more details. (1)
