More information : A Neolithic bank barrow, seen as a cropmark, was mapped from good quality air photographs. The barrow is defined by two parallel linear ditches 235m long, c.10m apart, aligned roughly N-S (SU 6111 8573; Morph No. TG.107.10.1).
The bank barrow was originally described as part of SU 68 NW 40. It is located c.600m E of the River Thames in an area of flat land containing many other Prehistoric ritual and funerary monuments, including round barrows and at least four Neolithic mortuary enclosures (TG.107.8.1, TG.107.9.1, TG.107.11.1, TG.107.15.1)
This description is based on data from the RCHME MORPH2 database. (1)
Small scale excavation has clarified the date and interpretation of the bank barrow, and has shown that the Neolithic mortuary enclosure (SU 68 NW 170) adjacent to the S end of the bank barrow predates the barrow. Another enclosure appears to underlie, and therefore to predate, the bank barrow's N end (SU 68 NW ?). (2) |
