More information : A Neolithic mortuary enclosure, seen as a cropmark, was mapped from good quality air photographs. The enclosure appears as an incomplete rectangle with slightly rounded corners, 15m wide and at least 20m long. The long axis is aligned E-W; the E end is not visible. (SU 6109 8561; Morph No. TG.107.9.1).
The enclosure is located 600m E of the River Thames, in an area of flat land containing many other Prehistoric ritual and funerary monuments, including round barrows, a bank barrow (TG.107.10.1) and at least three other mortuary enclosures (TG.107.8.1, TG.107.11.1, TG.107.15.1). It was originally described as part of SU 68 NW 40.
This description is based on data from the RCHME MORPH2 database. (1)
The mortuary enclosure lies adjacent to the S end of a Neolithic bank barrow (TG.107.10.1); small scale excavation has indicated that the enclosure predates the construction of the bank barrow. (2)
