Summary : The Pavilion Building at London Zoo was built in 1921-22 as Tea Rooms and was originally part of Captain George Swinton's 1913 redevelopment of the Zoo. The Italian Renaissance style building was designed by John James Joass and built by contractors J Jarvis and Sons Limited. It is of brick with stuccoed elevations and steel framed windows. The ground floor housed the tea room which also had a raised outdoor terrace and a bandstand which was added in 1924-25. The tea room was converted into a gift shop in 1989 by John S Bonnington Partnership.The first floor and roof terrace were originally designed for special parties but since the 1960s has been used as the Zoo's staff canteen. |
