Summary : 1944 wreck of Scottish cargo vessel, which was torpedoed off the convoy rendezvous point off St. Catherine's Point, en route to the Normandy landing beaches with ammunition, for which she had been requisitioned, a few days after the commencement of Operation Neptune. She was lost together with the ASHANTI (1163552). Constructed of steel in 1914, she was a steam-driven vessel. |
More information : Ex-YEWBANK, ex-OKEHAMPTON, ex-ABERDALE. This armed merchant ship was forming up for the same Normandy beach-head landing convoy as the SS ASHANTI when it was also attacked by a German E-boat (motor torpedo boat). Carrying a full cargo of ammunition, the ship literally disappeared in one gigantic explosion, which killed all but one member of the crew and one DEMS gunner. (5)
