More information : (NY 4719 6140) Milecastle 60 (GS) (Site of) (1) A spot called High Strand is the traditional site of Milecastle 60. In 1851 it yielded an altar to Cocidius, erected by the Sixth Legion, and now at Castlesteads. (2)
Details of inscription. (3)
Nothing visible on the ground. (4)
There is no surface trace of the milecastle, not even a vegetation mark. MacLauchlan thought that there was enough evidence to fit the milecastle at a spot called High Strand, about midway between Old Wall and Bleatarn, 7 furlongs from the last milecastle and about 60 yards west of the termination of a field road, which runs along the Ditch of the Wall. The altar is now recorded as NY 46 SE 32. (5-5a)
This location falls within the area mapped from aerial photographs by English Heritage's Hadrian's Wall NMP, but no convincing traces of the milecastle were identified during that survey. (7)
Located on the English Heritage map of Hadrian's Wall 2010. (8)
