Summary : Excavations at Bleatarn have suggested the existence of quarries, possibly of Roman date, but the excavations were unclear on the precise relationship between the quarry evidence (marked F on the overlay transcribed from Haverfield's plan) and the Vallum at this point. The confusing nature of the reports and the poor surface evidence for the Vallum must question the reliability of all the features being ascribed a Roman date. |
More information : (Area NY 4655 6117) Excavations at Bleatarn in 1894-5 proved it to be the site of a quarry for stone used in the building of the Wall. (1)
Stone bearing clear tool-marks was found and "investigation showed that a large part of the field has at an early time been worked for stone". (2)
Quarrying of apparently Roman origin although ground evidence suggests post-Roman activity here also. (3)
