Monument Number 11545

Hob Uid: 11545
Location :
Cumbria
Carlisle
St. Cuthbert Without
Grid Ref : NY4226052010
Summary : St Ninian's Well - Holy Well
More information : (NY 4226 5201) St Ninian's Well (GT) (1)

St Ninian's Well, Briscoe, is listed as a Holy Well. A 19th century
arched building protects the well. (2-3)

The head wall and alcove are intact and in good condition. The walls
of the well itself are broken down and overgrown but the lower
course of stone is intact. The height of the side walls where they
join the head wall suggests that they were originally built to the
height of the line shown within the alcove, and the amount of loose
stone tends to confirm this. In general the side and end walls now
stand about 18" above the water. The head wall is approx 5 ft above
the water. (4)
