More information : (NY 40085593) Cross (NR) (1) See ground photograph. (2) The Market Cross, or Carlisle Cross, 1682, on the site of an earlier cross. An Ionic column on a square base set upon five circular steps. The column carries a cubical stone block with four vertical sundials, surmounted by a crowned lion. Bonnie Prince Charlie proclaimed his father King here in 1745. Grade 1. (3 -5) 1. 947 Market Cross (or Carlisle Cross) NY 4055 6/7 1.6.49. I 2. 1682. Marks the City Centre, where the Roman Forum stood, and traditional place for public proclamations and meetings. Bonnie Prince Charlie proclaimed his father king here in 1745. Ionic column on a pedestal set upon 5 circular steps. The column carries a cubical stone block with 4 vertical sundials, surmounted by a carved lion with a crown holding the Dormont Book. All in stone, some ornament picked out in colour and gilt. Inscription "Joseph Reed, Mayor, 1682" on North face. Authority 6 is the full text of Authority 3. (6)
