More information : Gardens at Newstead Abbey created during Medieval period until the present. Formal gardens are situated to the north, east and southeast of Newstead Abbey. They are enclosed by walls dating from the 16th and 18th century. Features include a rectangular pond located with a number of terraces and is probably 16th century, adapted from a Medieval fishpond. Later features include a 19th century tropical garden, an early 20th century knot garden and rock garden, a mid 20th century heather garden and 20th century flower and rose gardens. The grounds to the abbey also contain lakes which were created during the late 1740s, the mid 18th century and in the mid 19th century. Also present is an early 19th century Japanese Garden. (1)
The gardens were first laid out during the early 18th century and altered in 1818-circa 1830. Additional gardens were laid out during the later 19th century, the early 20th century and during the 1970s. The deer park is 18th century in date. (2) |
