More information : (NY 4091 5811) Inscribed Altars found AD 1804 (NAT) (1)
An altar to Mars Cocidius was found in 1804 in cutting a drain across the line of the Wall west of Tarraby. Now in Carlisle Museum. Full details of inscription. (2)
"It is also recorded that "The ends of the altar rested on two stones, and that the inscription was downwards, and a cavity below it" (a). From this account it seems clear that the stone had been re-used as the cover for a culvert through the Wall and the find-spot has no necessary bearing on its original position". (3)
Fragments of an ornate dedication to Mercury were found in 1938. (4)
