Summary : A Roman milestone of Constantine 1 (AD 307-37) was found in AD 1760 on the Roman Road from Carlisle to Penrith, near Hesket. The present location of the Milestone is uncertain.
More information : A Roman milestone of Constantine was found on the
Roman road from Carlisle to Penrith, near Hesket, in 1760. It was
preserved at Hoddam Castle, Dumfriesshire, and seen by Pennant,
but now apparently lost. (1-2)

Details of inscription.

2288. Milestone, 26 in. high, 14 in. wide, found in 1766 in the
parish of Hesket on the Roman road between Carlisle and Penrith.
Gough recorded it in, or shortly after, 1768, as being at Armathwaite
Castle, 9 miles south-east of Carlisle. Pennant, probably wrongly,
cited it as seen in 1772 at Hoddom Castle. Now lost. Reproduced from
Gough, ms. note in his copy of Horsley.
