GRIMSTHORPE PARK

DESCRIPTION + /

Landscape park and gardens to Grimsthorpe Castle covering an area of 1000 hectares. The park was recorded in Domesday and also documented in 1516. A formalised park scheme was in place during the early 17th century. The gardens were probably first laid out circa 1680 but were replaced by Stephen Switzer in 1711. A design for the updating of the park was created by Lancelot Brown in 1771 and included an expansion of the park's area. Most of Switzer's design was replaced during the late 19th century. Gardens were also created between 1960-1970.
