Summary : Landscape park and gardens to Belton House covering an area of 505 hectares. The park was first documented in 1690 and was altered during the late 18th century and early 19th century. It contains a golf course which was originally laid out in 1892. The gardens were first created in the early to mid 17th century. New formal gardens were planted 1685-1688. Alterations took place in the early-mid 18th century with further changes taking place from 1770-1807. In 1810-11 a new garden, designed by Jeffrey Wyatville, was laid out. A restoration of the gardens and creation of a new garden took place in 1879. |
More information : Landscape park and ornamental gardens at Belton House. The park was landscaped during the 17th century and documented in the late 17th century and early 18th century as containing formal gardens. The avenues and formal garden north of the house survive from this phase. Eighteenth century development include woodland containing a cascade on the River Witham. Landscaping also took place in 1778. Formal parterres were established during the late 19th century. The grounds were taken over by the National Trust in 1984. (1)
