More information : SU 1489 4381. A sub-rectangular enclosure noted by Crawford and confirmed by later geophysical survey. Associated with other minor linear features, it is located within the north-western sector of Durrington Walls (SU 14 SE 118) and is assumed to be of Iron Age or Roman date. See the Durrington Walls record for the full investigative history and bibliography of the site and its immediate vicinity. (1-2)
The enclosure lies within, and immediately adjacent to, the perimeter of Durrington Walls, and is visible as a cropmark on an aerial photograph taken in 1927. It is defined by ditches, with overall dimensions of 45m x 42m. Within the enclosure, on the northeastern and southeastern sides, additional ditches form an inner enclosure 37m x 32m. The enclosure has been mapped by both RCHME's Salisbury Plain Training Area NMP and EH's Stonehenge WHS Mapping Project. (3) |
