More information : Motte and Bailey 350 yds E of Castle Frome church (SO67084587). The motte is 60 yds in diameter and rises circa 14ft above the bailey; there is a slight sinking in the top. A scarp to the E and S probably indicates the outline of the bailey. Running along the SW of the motte is a sunken way partly protected by a rampart on the W side. In poor condition - site wooded. (1)
September 1956 - site cleared by timber felling. (2)
The area in which this feature falls has been re-afforested and is virtually impenetrable. A slight rise visible at SO 67094584 would appear to be the motte, while the scarp marking the outline of the bailey is visible at SO 67154583.
The general outlines of both motte and bailey are visible on APs. A hollow way, of indeterminable age, runs from SO 6711 4562 to 67014577. Mr Cohen (2) is dead, and local enquiries elicited no further information. (3)
