Great Howle Camp

Hob Uid: 111925
Location :
County of Herefordshire
Walford
Grid Ref : SO6114720214
Summary : The earthwork remains of a probable medieval ringwork mapped from aerial photographs.
More information : [SO 61152022] EARTHWORK [LB] (1)

Great Howle Camp consists of a roughly rectangular enclosure with rounded angles and a rampart with openings, perhaps modern, at the NW and SE ends.. In poor condition. (2)

The work is more oval than rectangular in form. Indications of a ploughed-out ditch, and the strength of the bank, both externally
and internally, where best preserved, suggest the possible remains of a ring-motte. The "openings" noted are modern lowerings of the bank. Published survey (25") revised. (3)

SO 612202. Great Howle; a possible ringwork. Not visited by
King and Alcock. (4)

Listed by Shoesmith. (5)

The earthwork remains of the probable Medieval ringwork enclosure described by the previous authorities were seen centred at SO 6114 2021 and mapped at 1:10,000 scale from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Gloucestershire NMP project. The site appears as a sub-rectangular bank defined enclosure measureing approximately 38m x 50m. No trace of any further internal or external features could be detected from the aerial photographs.
