Greenwells No 183. A circle of 10 stones each c 3ft high standing apart and enclosing a space 18 ft diameter. It probably originally surrounded the base of a cairn. A hollow was found in the centre 2ft diameter and as much as in depth; in it were found the cremated remains of an adult and overlying it a layer of sand and 3" thick on which was placed a 'food vessel'. In the hollow were also found two sherds of another vessel. (2)

NY 49392195 Ring cairn on Askham Fell and four adjacent stones. A turf-covered mound of stones up to 0.7m high and 10m in diameter. Around the edge of the summit of this cairn are ten large, closely spaced, earthfast boulders up to 0.9m high with smaller stones in between, which form a circle 6m in diameter. The centre of the cairn, within the circle of the boulders, contains a hollow 0.4m deep. There are four upright stones 8m south east of the cairn, which are up to 0.2m high set in a rectangular configuration measuring 2.5m by 3m; scheduled. (5) |
