2.
A stone building, said to be of early medieval date C12 and the
house of the King's Forester of the Long Forest. A rectangular
block with gabled ends. Thick stone rubble walls, 6 ft at base,
and tapering. The gables are timber framed, with modern brick
filling. North end and east side each have 1 window in moulded stone
frame with single mullion. The remaining fenestration consists of
1 or 2 poor small casements; recessed doorway on west side having
semi-circular arch with ball-flower decoration, probably a
reconstituted Norman doorway. 1 stone stack on east side. The
staircase is in the thickness of the wall. At south end is a
blocked window frame with perhaps original oak transom. An early
C19 stone house attached on east side.
(M E Wood. "C13 Domestic Architecture in England". Supplement to
Vol CV, Architects Journal, 1950). (6)

Known locally as The Lodge, Forester's House, Upper Millichope Farm - name confirmed by OS Field Reviser. (7)
