(1) The town walls of Ludlow were commenced or comtemplated in 1233, the work probably continuing until 1317. Broad Gate (Grade 1), consisting of two flanking semi-circular drum towers; now merged with 16th/18th century domestic additions, is the sole survivor of the original gatehouse. There were also Linney, Corve, Old, Galdeford, Mill and Dinham Gates. However sufficient fragmentary fabric remains to trace almost the entire circuit. Number 69 Old Street (SO 51367455 on OS 1:2500 1968) a rectangular three storeyed stone rubble cottage is possible a reconstructed and altered town wall tower. (2-3)
