Summary : The Iron Gate at the Tower of London was a simple gate tower constructed during the reign of Edward III and formed part of larger plans to strengthen the southern defences. The tower commanded a walled causeway through to the Develin Tower at the south east corner of the outer wall. It was demolished in 1680 on the orders of a committee invesitgating the strength of the defences and exploring ideas for expanding accommodation for the garrison. |
