Summary : Earthwork remains of a Medieval motte, 2 metres high, raised on the end of a natural spur, have been identified at Ashton.

Castle Tump, a roughly circular mound 33 yds in diameter at the base, occupying the end of a spur from which it rises to a height of 19ft., rising only some 7ft above the ground at the back of the spur, from which it is separated by a slight ditch. (2)

Ashton Castle Tump, surrounded by a moat fed by a stream. (3)

A motte, 2m high, raised on the end of a natural spur. The "moat" is a dry water course.
Resurveyed at 25". (4)

Condition unchanged since 1967. Published survey (25") correct. (5)

[Source 3). Prior to field investigation, R1 appears to have confused this site with that at Pipe Aston (SO 47 SE 1), which the VCH describes as moated]. (6)

SO 514650. Small motte, much rounded. (7)
